Sometimes you wake up in the morning and you just KNOW that it’s going to be “one of those days”. Low energy, low vibe, no motivation. You know what I mean. I woke up exactly like that this morning. And you know what? It’s OK. It’s OK to not be blasting out 100% energy all the time. It’s HARD as an entrepreneur to stay super-positive, smashing goals left, right and centre, being the only one making all the decisions and forging your own way. It can be scary, lonely and hard to stay motivated.
So it’s ok to feel bleurgh from time to time, BUT it’s not ok to stay in that low energy space and it’s not ok to set yourself up for a whole day of feeling crap and then feeling even worse because you know you’ve wasted a day. But what can we do about it?
The massively important first step is to look at the reasons as to WHY you are feeling low on motivation. Be HONEST with yourself, and I mean REALLY honest.
For me – I’m tired, my toddler is being a toe-rag and very mischievous at the moment (but she thinks she is being HILARIOUS, which is even more annoying) but the real reason is that I’ve been doing a lot of “behind the scenes” work this week and less client-facing work, which makes me feel guilty that I’m not building my business as much as I feel that I should be.
Then let’s look at five easy ways to jump-start ourselves out of that low-vibe fug so we don’t stay there all day.
- Make sure you’ve had enough food and drink. I know it sounds obvious but being dehydrated and having low-sugar can really make a difference to your mood!
- Get outside, or move around, have a dance-off with yourself! Whatever you need to do to get your blood flowing. I love to get into fresh air, because for me fresh air = fresh perspective and I ALWAYS come back feeling better and ready to do what needs to be done.
- Look at the reasons for your low energy. Cross off anything that you can’t directly influence. It’s a waste of your energy to worry about those things. Don’t sweat them. But do make a plan for all of the things you CAN do something about.
- Do a few easy, low energy tasks to get you started for the day and to get you feeling productive. This might be posting on Instagram,
- Reach out! It can be lonely doing it all by yourself – know that you are not the only one struggling, despite how social media makes it look! That’s why people have coaches, mentors, go to networking events and are part of mastermind groups or collectives.
And the biggie for when things are getting really tough:
Stay connected to your overall goal. You might need to revisit it if it’s changed or you’ve achieved part of it already. Visualise exactly what you want, how it will benefit you, your clients, your family. Make it feel REAL.
Work backwards from your overall goal. What is the FIRST step, the very first TINY step that you need to take? So it might be that your overall goal is to lose 10 pounds, but you haven’t been to the gym for a week and that’s why you’re feeling bad. The first step for you is to put your trainers on. At that point, you’ve basically decided that you’re going to go to the gym – so off you go! It might be opening up a document that you’ve been working on but can’t get finished. It might be getting the number for the tax office to sort that out!
Then, once you know what your first step needs to be, ask yourself these two questions:
What will happen if I don’t do this thing?
What will happen if I do do it?
I would love to know if any of these work for you, and what other ways you’ve tried to get yourself up and at ’em when you’re feeling low on motivation!
