In the spirit of getting to know each other and being transparent with you, I wanted to share my take on the effort it really takes to build a successful business that enables you to make MORE than “enough” money AND allows you to do all the things you wanted to when you ditched your 9 to 5.
There are three inescapable truths…
Most of us make things waaaay harder than they need to be. I used to pride myself on my ability to work everything out by myself and never ask for help, but I’ve learnt that, when it comes to business, there’s no bonus points for figuring things out alone. Plus struggling alone really sucks arse. It’s hard, depressing and wastes precious time.
Here’s what’s works well for me: Concentrating on doing what I know works well, what I enjoy doing and what I’m good at. As well as asking for help (and paying for it!) when I come across a gap in my expertise.
Taking care of ourselves is much more important than we think, and we need to dedicate more time to it. Building a successful and sustainable business that supports you for the long term is a marathon, not a sprint. I don’t care how much people go on about the “hustle” – you’ll always have leftover jobs on your to do list, goals you want to achieve, other projects you’ve got bubbling away and fulfilling your sales. And honestly, you’ll be shafted if you don’t look after yourself and get sick or too tired. Likewise, not making sure your cup is full, can leave you feeling resentful, working far too late and at weekends and completely isolated.
Here’s what’s works well for me: When I find myself feeling unfocused and starting to get that panicky feeling, I know I’m overdue for a break. I take a walk, go for a climb or meet a friend for coffee. Even better, I plan these things in my calendar in advance so I know I’m taking good care of myself.I know that when I get back to my desk I’ll be much more productive because I know exactly what I need to do with my time.
(It sounds easy, doesn’t it? But personal experience tells me taking care of ourselves on this business-building journey can be the biggest challenge of all!)
You’re great at what you do… but if you want to bring in more customers, you need to put yourself out there and get a whole bunch more visible. Being the face of your business and doing all that self-promotion and trumpet-blowing are critical in business – and although we often feel super uncomfortable doing this, it honestly doesn’t have to feel sleazy. And it’s ok to do this stuff even if it’s not perfect and YOU’TE not perfect.
What specific activities should you be doing to take your business to the next level? Well, that depends on your goals and where you’re at in your business journey now.
Stick with me because I LOVE sharing resources I use in my own business with you.
Hang tight, a special programme is coming your way very soon! If you’ve been thinking about working with me, but working one to one isn’t for you for WHATEVER reason, I think you’re going to love it.
